Comment I received about governing use of animals in research

After viewing our site, I received this comment from a professor/researcher at the medical school of the University of Mississippi. He has been a leader in behavioral pharmacoly research, studying the behavioral components of cocaine addiction. His resume is filled with accolades. His research program works with monkeys, and I think we are pretty aware of the public outcry against using animals for research.  Unfortunately, the arguments for and against are both valid, and very difficult to resolve. We feel, as he points out, that there needs to be established and enforced methods for monitoring conditions in our animal control facilities as well as other humane shelters. That's why we advocate that our readers themselves, and encourage others, to join organizations such as AVRAL, whose purpose is to bring about such legislation.

"It has always struck me as surprising how tightly the government regulates the care of animals in research and how loosely clinical animal care is regulated (I don’t really know the details of that). We are subject to unannounced inspections by the government at any time. We must conform to written protocols that must be reviewed and approved by a large committee that includes representatives of the community, not involved in research. Veterinarians see our animals every day."

message from AVRAL, why it is so important to sign up with this org.

.  Bham politicians are apathetic when it comes to the BJCACS, there are only a couple of exceptions.  We are getting a voting bloc in place, and plan to make humane shelters a centerpiece of our work there...the BJC doesn't meet minimum standards of care.  That has to change---there, and at every shelter.  Our first task is to ban gassing as a form of euthanasia.  Four shelters publicly admit they do it, we know of two others that do, and we have an insider's report that sixteen are in operation.  We've drafted a bill, we have two sponsors for it in the legislature.  We're getting the ball rolling, creating a better climate for change in animal welfare in Alabama.  But it all hinges on how many people join.......
